交朋友起码是两个人的事，所以friend必须用复数，不能用单数，make friends with, keep friends with, be friends这三个短语意思很相近，make friends with强调的是动作，它的意思是由原来不熟悉甚至不认识，通过一段交往后成为朋友；keep friends with强调的是持续性，即“与••••••保持友好关系”；be friends with强调的是状态，即“与••••••处于友好状态”。
make fun of取笑，嘲弄：
We all make fun of him behind his back. 我们都在背后取笑他。
It’s wrong to make fun of a cripple. 取笑跛子是不对的。

(1) make room for, make place for, leave room for, have room for的区别：make place for与make room for可以互换，leave room for是“留出地方”。例如：
Leave room for this big box. 给这口大箱子留点地方。
(2) have room for是“还有地方”。例如：
But I’ve eaten so much, I don’t have room for another piece of cake. 我吃得太多了，哪怕一块点心我也吃不下了。
(3) room作“房间”用时是可数名词。例如：
a three – roomed house一幢三间一套的房子，它作“空间”用时是不可数名词。
make sense有意义；合理；可行，讲得通；解释：
She doesn’t talk much, but what she says makes sense. 她话不多，但言之有理。
The result did not make sense.这种疚无法解释。
make sense of听懂，弄懂•••••的意思：

make the best of, get the best of: 两者含义不一样，make the best of是“充分利用”的意思，后接时间、机会、场合、资源等名词和短语。get the best of亦作get the better of （用在两者之间时），是主语胜过宾语，而含有“占优势，占上风”的意思。后面一般接代词或表单位、集体或困难、疾病的名词。
make the best of bead job / bargain / business从失败中吸取教训，善处进境，反败为胜：
Why did you make the best of a bad job? 你们为何不从失败中吸取教训呢？
make the best of both worlds 把两方面的长处结合起来：
She makes the best of both worlds by living in the suburb and working in the city. 她在城里工和，但住在郊外，这样城乡两地的乐趣地都能领略。

She always makes the worst of her troubles. 她遇到困难便消极怠惰。

The delegation is composed of well – known men of letters. 代表团由一批著名学者组成。
man of he world深通世故的人；阅历丰富的人：

many a 很多；不少：
We spent many a day at the seaside. 我们在海边度过了许多日子。
Many a man has ride it before. 那件事以前好多人都试过了。

many a 和many意思一样，所不同的是many后跟复数可数名词,many a 后跟单数可数名词。
map out拟订；计划：
I hear the plan has already been mapped out. 我听说计划已经制订出来了。
mark down记下；选择，选定；降低••••••的售价，降价出售：
I marked down an appointment in a date book. 把约会记在记事册上。
We marked down the spot as a suitable place for camping. 我们把那地点选作适合野营的地方。

mark off划出••••••的界限，区分，划分，划出，标出：

mark time原地踏步；停滞不前：

mark time的原意是军事用语“原地跳步”，作比喻用法时，意为表面运动，实际上没有进展，以等待时机到来，不能用于被动语气，mark time 和make time虽然外形相似，但意思完全不同，要注意区别。
mark up给•••••打高分数（加分）；记账；涨价：
We marked up those rare books. 我们提高了那些珍贵书的定价。
mark with有•••••的标记，有天然痕迹；留下可见的印迹；写着，印有：
The cloths were all marked with Goldine. 衣服上那有金利来的标记。
A zebra is marked with strips. 斑马身上有条纹。
He is slightly marked with small pox. 他稍有天花疤痕。
marry off嫁出（女儿）：
She has married off all her daughters. 她把所有的女儿都嫁出去了。
marry … to … 把••••••嫁给；把••••••和••••••结合起来：
He married both his daughters to rich directors. 他把两个女儿都嫁给富有的董事。
Let’s marry art to practicality. 让我们使艺术和实用性合起来。
marry up结合，配合：
The pieces of the broken vase can not marry up. 打碎的花瓶想不起来了。
match up（使）相配；（使）相适合：
Her blouse and skirt match up nicely. 她的短上衣和裙子很相配。
I found it difficult to match up the different versions of the event by the two eye-witnesses. 我发觉那次事件的两位目击者的不同廉洁很难对得起来。
match up to与•••••相适应；符合••••••的标准：
The imitation hardly matches up to the original. 这个仿制品简直不能同原件相比。
matter of course理所当然的事：
Since his proposal ran contrary to the wishes of the community, its rejection was a matter of course. 既然他的建议与大家的愿望背道而驰，它理所当然受到大家的拒绝。
matter of fact事实：
It’s a matter of fact that he runs faster than you do. 他比你路得快，这是事实。

may as well不妨，倒不如；还是•••••的好：
We may as well stay where we are. 我们留在现在住的地方到也不错。
We may as well go and have a look. 我们还是去瞧瞧吧。
may well满可以，很有理由，大有可能，不妨：
You may well say so. 你很有理由这么说。

may as well, may well: 这两条短语只有一字之差，但意义完全不同。前者作“还不如，不妨”解；后者作“有足够的理由，尽可能”解。两者后都接不带go的不定式。例如：
Now, you’re here, you may as well make yourself useful. 好，既然你也在这儿，不妨也派上用场。
mean business［口］是当真的，不是开玩笑的：
When he said he would do it, he meant business. 他要是说了要做这件事，那就是真的要做。
mean to do sth. 有意做某事，打算做某事：
I’ve been meaning to write to you for weeks. 几个星期来我一直想给你去信。
He seems obviously meant to be a soldier. 他似乎生来就适合做军人。
mean well (by / to) （对••••••）怀有好意：

measure one’s length跌倒，摔倒：

measure up测量，讲师：衡量；合格，达标，符合标准：

He measures up to his job in every way. 他在各方面都很称职。
meet one’s waterloo遭到惨败；大吃败仗：

miss out (on) 未得到，未成功：
You missed out by not coming with us. We had a great time. 你没有跟我们一起去是失掉了一个好机会；我们玩得痛快极了。
I missed out on his offer of a free holiday in French. 他让我免费去法国度假，我却坐失良机。
miss the bus/ boat错过机会，坐失良机：
You shouldn’t sit all day and miss the bus. 你不能整天坐着，错过机会。
miss the mark未打中目标，未达目的，失败，不成功；不正确；不恰当：
It is regretful that I missed the mark. 很遗憾我未达到目的。
His answers missed the mark every time. 他每次都答错。
mistake … for … 错把•••••当作•••••，把•••••误认为•••••••：
He mistook that stick for a snake. 他把那根棍子错看成蛇了。
mix in with与•••••混在一起，与•••••交往：
The good seeds are mixed in with the bad ones. 好种子与坏种子混在一起。
Never mix in with such a boy. 不要同这种孩子交往。
mix it闹事，捣乱；打起来，吵起来，纠成一团：
