  Our teachers often laboured on into the night. 我们的老师常常一直工作到深夜。

  The old truck laboured its way up the hill. 那辆破卡车吃力地开上山去。

land up到达;歇脚;最后到达的地方:
   After hunting for a job months, he landed up teaching at a village school. 他找了几个月的工作,最后到达一所乡村学校教书。

   The last word can’t be said on this matter until a careful discussion is made. 在进行细致的讨论前,还不能对这个事作出定论。
late in the day迟了,晚了:
   It’s late in the day to think of a change of plan when we’ve already begun. 我们早已开始,要想改变计划已经晚了。
later on以后:
    Let’s discuss the matter later on. 这件事我们以后再讨论吧。
laugh at因••••••而发笑;嘲笑;蔑视,对••••••满不在乎:
    They all laughed at the news. 他们听到这个消息,都笑了。
    Don’t laugh at the boy. He’s nervous enough as it is. 不要笑这个孩子,他已经够紧张了。

   Lay the baby down gently. 把这个婴孩轻轻放下。
   First they had to lay down a plan for the prokject. 他们首先得为这项工程制定一个计划。
   The conference will lay down the proper measures and methods. 会议将规定适当的措施和方法。
lay down one’s arms 放下武器;投降:
  They declared that they would never lay down their arms. 他们宣布他们决不投降。
lay down one’s cards摊牌;把意图公开:
   Sooner or later, they will have to lay thir cards down. 他们迟早要摊牌的。
lay down one’s life牺牲(自己的)生命:

   Every time they came to land, they laid in a good supply of fresh water. 他们每次靠岸都要备足淡水。

  Sometimes he was laid off for long periods. 有时他长期没有工作。
  These factories are expected to lay off another 10,000 workers by the end of the year. 这些厂年底还要解雇一万工人。

lay one’s hand (s) on得到;收到:
   He wished he could lay his hand on a computer. 他想他要是能得到一台电脑就好了。

lay oneself out to do sth. 竭尽全力做某事:

lay out设计,布置(园林,版面等);摆好,放好:
   The hill has been laid out as a park. 这座小山布置成了一座公园。
   The place was tastefully laid out. 这地方面布局很雅致。
   They laid out a new table cloth for the dinner. 他们铺好了宴会用的新台布。
lay over停留;推迟(某事):
  On the way to Beijing, he had to lay over at Jinan for an hour to wait for a plane. 在北京的途中,为了等飞机,他得在济南逗留一个小时。
  For some reason, the meeting was laid over till the next week. 由于某种原因,会议延到下周举行。
lay stress / weight on sth 侧重于某事:
   In his talk, the professor laid stress / weight on how to learn English well. 在谈话中,教授着重讲了如何学好英语的方法。
lay sth. on the table把(提案等)搁置起来:
  As the bill failed to be passed with a majority of votes, they decided to lay it on the table. 由于大多数人没有投票支持那项法案,他们决定把它暂搁置起来。

   You should lay his words to heart and try to improve your teaching method. 你应该认真听取他的意见,努力改进教学方法。
lay the table 摆(桌子)(吃饭):
  His daughter came in and laid the table for supper. 他女儿进来摆桌子吃饭。
lay up贮存;积蓄;搁置:
   They laid up a lot of vegetables for the coming winter. 他们为冬天贮存了大量蔬菜。
   They laid up the ship for repairs. 他们把船拖上岸来修理。
lay up sth. for oneself为自己找(麻烦等):
    He’s laid up a lot of trouble for himself, because he didn’t follow his workmates’ advice. 由于不听工友们的劝告,他吃了不少苦头。
lay wait for埋伏;等待:
   The tiger laid wait for its prey. 老虎等着捕食。
lay waste使••••••变成废墟:
  In less that an hour’s time, the typhoon laid waste a number of towns and villages along the coast. 不到一个小时,台风就把沿海许多城镇和乡村了废墟。
laid up病使在床,生病不能活动:
   I was laid up for six weeks with a very serious illness. 我得了一场重病,卧床了六个星期。
lead a dog’s life过困苦的日子:
   They led a dog’s life in those days. 那段时间他们的生活极端贫困。

lead away使盲从,使转移:

   Blindly copying others might very well lead to losses. 盲目搬用别人的经验,很容易赞成损失。

   lead to 中的to 是介词,后面应接名词或代词,该短语不用于被动语态。例如:That kind of all leads to argument. 那样的谈话往往会引起争吵。
lead up to把•••••••一直带到;慢慢引起;导致:
   The guide lead us to the top of the mountain. 向导把我们一带到山顶。
      He then led up to a new topic. 接着他把话头一个新话题上去了。

lean on / upon 靠在••••••在;依靠,信赖:
   Don’t always lean on others for help. 不要老是依赖别人的帮助。
lean over俯伏:
  He leaned over and whispered something into my ear. 他控过身来,向我轻轻耳语了一番。
lean over backwards(为做某事或达到某一目的)费尽心机:
   Jackson is leaning over backwards to please his wealthy uncle. 杰克逊想尽种种办法讨好他那有钱的叔父。
lean towards倾向于:
  His interest leans towards biochemistry. 他的兴趣在生物化学上面。
learn about学到有关••••••的知识,了解到:
  We are learning about the English language while learning English. 我们在学习英语的同时,也在学习有关这门语言的知识。
  We learned about him from his words. 我们从的言谈中了解到他的情况。
learn form向••••••学习;从•••••学习:
   Lei Feng is a good example and everyone should learn from him. 雷锋是一个好榜样,我们每一个人都应向他学习。
   We should learn from our failure and setbacks. 我们应该从失败和挫折中吸取教训。
learn of听到;了解到:
  I learned of his arrival only yesterday. 我昨天才知道他来了。
  His mother leant of her son’s success in the newspaper. 他母亲从报纸上解到儿子成功的消息。

   learn of 和learn about都是“获知”的意思,既可表示“听说”,也可表示通过“阅读”等其它途径了解
learn sth. by heart默记;熟记;背诵:
   This is a good poem and I’ll try to learn it by heart. 这是首好诗,我要把它背下来。
learn the ropes掌握要领,懂得秘诀:
   It didn’t take her long to learn the ropes, she is operating the machine all by herself now. 她没多久就掌握了要领,现在已能独立操作这台机器了。
least of all最不;最无:
   None of us can tell where he has gone, me least of all. 我们不知道他上哪儿去了,尤其是我,更是一无所知。
leave a bad taste in sb.’s mouth给某人留下不好的印象:
   His rudeness to the teacher left a bad taste in my mouth. 他对老师的无礼给我留下了很坏的印象。
leave a message留话;留口信;留条:
   I left you a message yesterday when I went out. 我昨天出去的时候给你留下了一个便条。
leave about 乱放;乱丢;乱弃:
  She told her child not to leave his toys about. 她叫孩子不要乱玩具。
leave alone不管;不理会;不碰;不打扰;不惹:
   Leave that piano alone. 别碰那架钢琴。
   She wants to think things out for herself, so we’d better leave her along. 她想独自思考,我们最好别打扰她。
   Leave the dog alone or he’ll bite you. 别惹那条狗,不然它会咬你的。
leave aside不考虑,不管:
   Leave it aside for the time being, will you? 暂时把它放一放,好吗?
leave behind留下,没带走,遗忘;使落在后面:
  The men had all run away, leaving only old women and children behind. 男人都跑掉了,只留下老年妇女和孩子。
  No one of course wanted to be left behind. 当然谁也不甘落后。

  leave behind 和leave over的意思都与“留下”有关,但前者有“遗留”的意思。例如:
  He left debts behind.他身后遗留下债务。后者指“搁置”,含有把事情留待以后做之意。leave behind作“落在后面”讲时,通常用于被动语态。
leave fiat抛弃,遗弃,半途突然离开:
   The car ran out of gas and left them flat ten miles from town. 汽车没油了,把他们丢在离城十英里的地方。
leave for动身到;出发到:
   We’ll leave for Hangzhou by plane. 我们将乘飞机去杭州。
leave go of松手;撒手:
  Grasp the rope and don’t leave go of it. 抓住这根绳子,别撒手。

   What we’ve done still leaves much to be desired. 我们的工作还有很多不足之处有待改进。

leave nothing to be desired尽善尽美;十分令人满意:

leave off停止,中断:
  He’ll begin where I left off. 他将从我停下的地方开始。
  It’s time to leave off talking and to start acting. 现在请停止谈论,开始行动了。
leave out省去;遗留;忽略:
  I think this paragraph can be left out without affecting the article as a whole. 我认为,这一段可以省去,全文并不受影响。
  When you copy this document, be careful not to leave out a single word. 抄文件时,当心别漏一个字。

   Teachers should lend an ear to students’ opinions. 教师们应该倾听学生们的意见。
lend color to sth. 使(某事)显得可信;使某事生色;使某事动听:
   The illustrations he used helped to lend color to his lecture. 他彩的图表了的讲座大为生色。
lend oneself to sth. 参与某事:
   She tried to persuade her brother not to lend himself to such a matter. 他极力劝阻他弟弟不要参加这种事情。
