free from和free of在用作形容词短语时，可以句中和表语、状语、兵置定语的和宾补，表示“不受•••••的影响；没有••••••的；免于••••••的”的意思，有时可以互换使用。不同的是free from后常接一些表示“困难，麻烦、影响、污染（如：danger, trouble, difficulty, pollution）”等意义的名词，而free of则常与charge, cost, tax, duty, responsibility等构成固定习语。
