用于表示“检查”“核对”等意思的短语很多，英国人习惯用check on, 美国人多用check up on, 其后都跟有宾语；check up后多不跟宾语，间或跟宾语。check out作“检验”“核查”讲时，也主要用于美国英语。

(1) clear out和clean out都是“使••••••干净”的意思，但实际意思是不同的，前者意为“使••••••被清除掉，使 ••••••空出来”。例如：

(2) 而clean out则是“使••••••清洁”之意。例如：

close up和shut up两个短语都有关闭的意思，但用于“关闭”公路等交通渠道时，要用close up,不能用shut up.
